What I Do
I help make thrillers more exciting, business books more approachable and health books more inspiring. If you've finished your draft and don't know how to make it better, I can help you take it to the next level.
I provide developmental, structural and copy edits to expand and enhance your manuscript in order to challenge, excite and reward your reader. If you are looking to get published or to self-publish, I can help you achieve your goal of producing something special that gets attention.
About Me
I'm Sam Sainsbury. I’m a freelance editor and publishing consultant with fifteen years experience in the book industry.
I was Managing Editor at Penguin Random House and Senior Editor at Pan Macmillan Australia. I've edited a raft of best-selling and critically acclaimed books and worked with top-tier authors across the trade.
As a freelancer, I work with some of Australia's biggest publishing houses including Pan Macmillan, Allen and Unwin, Hachette and HarperCollins; self-publishing companies such as Independent Ink and Critical Mass Consulting; and aspiring, independent and self-publishing authors.
I have a Graduate Diploma of Editing and Publishing from RMIT and Bachelor of Arts (Media and Communication) from Melbourne University.
I live in Melbourne with my husband and two sons.

The First Three Chapters
Did you know most publishers and agents don't read past the first three chapters? I will read your whole manuscript, give you a short explanatory report and edit your first three chapters to make them unputdownable.
Manuscript Assessment
A professional, critical audit of the strengths and weakness of your manuscript to let you know if you're on the right track and how to make it better. I'll provide you with a detailed, constructive report on your story, themes and characters for fiction and argument, flow of ideas and accessibility for non-fiction.
Structural Editing
Big-picture analysis of plot, structure, themes, pace and characters for fiction and logic, flow of ideas, approach and reader engagement for non-fiction. I'll provide a detailed, solution-oriented report with positive, concrete suggestions for your consideration. I'll also mark-up your manuscript with the comments, queries and suggestions needed to take it to the next level.
Copyediting
Getting into the nitty-gritty, this edit focuses 'on the line' correcting your manuscript's grammar, spelling, punctuation, repetition, syntax and flow and also focuses on tightening and enhancing the plot, ensuring consistent chronology, strengthening character arcs, smoothing out tone and fine-tuning pace. You'll receive a marked-up manuscript and a short explanatory report to guide you forwards.
